Oregon Coast Alliance has been working to bring accountability to dune-grading in Cannon Beach. The City’s one Sand Management Plan expired in 2008. Nevertheless, homeowners’ associations that feel entitled to expansive ocean views have been pressing for great amounts of dune-grading over the last few years, especially Breakers Point. But the dunes in question are owned by the state, and dunes are an iconic part of Cannon Beach — very important for a tourist town. There needs to be updated sand information, and much more collaboration with concerned residents, before Cannon Beach could again consider extensive dune-grading. As dune-grading directly affects neighboring properties, collaboration is essential.
